I have been looking at different curriculum options for next year. Why does that seem to be such an overwhelming task?! Maybe because there are so many options?!
Anyway, I have been looking into My Father’s World. I was wondering if those of you who use this or have used it in the past would mind giving me a quick synopsis of what you like or don’t like about it.
Also, I would have a 5th grader and an 8th grader next year, so I would be starting at the 1st year’s set, and my oldest would only get one year of it before moving on to high school stuff (I can’t believe that, by the way!) Would it even be worth it to start My Father’s World at this point?
Any insight you could give would be greatly appreciated!
Wish I could give you some advice but I never had the guts to home shcool my kids. I wish you all the luck and I know you will figure it out and it will be great!

Next year at this time I will be able to give you an opinion!!!
I ordered the My Father's World -Exploring Countries and Cultures just about 10 days ago…I am SO excited to receive it!
Have you checked out the MFW forum???
Also there is a curriculum swap at this link… http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mfwcurriculumswap/ ….just request to become a member and you will find some great buys, there is a ECC deluxe set right now for I think it was $160ppd!!
Good luck with your choices!!!
I finished ordering on last Friday and understand the 'stress' of it!!
Hope you find the right one for your kids π I was homeschooled for years and loved it! Have a great Wednesday.
Nope, didn’t use that when I homeschooled.Wanted to stop in and say thanks for being such a good Blogging Buddy to so many of our members. I saw comments by you on many of the blogs.Did you see the contest we’re having? Should be fun!Have a wonderful day!
I’ll apologize at the beginning of this comment since I know it’s going to be a novel. π We’ve used MFW for 3 yrs. We started w/Adventures (which you won’t) and loved it. We used Countries and Cultures (yr. 1) and didn’t love it, but it was still an okay program. The things I added to it made it fun. The science was mostly terrible, though they have added one volume of AIG science that I think is better. This year, we’ve been using year 2, which is Creation to the Greeks. I am so frustrated with it! We generally love history, and my kids are bored out of their minds w/Streams of Civilization. The science is okay, but your older student might be bored w/it. In general, MFW’s Bible doesn’t go very in-depth, but I haven’t worried about it since my son does Bible quizzing at church. All this said, I know people who have used MFW for years and couldn’t say a negative word about it. In our case, the only reason we used it this year is because my sister basically gave it to us, and my husband wasn’t working. We’ll be using something different for next year, and the history was so terrible, IMO, that we aren’t doing it at all at this point. I’d rather hold off until I get something I love. Also…my kids are grades 1 and 4, so my perspective may be different than yours as well. Your kids may not find Streams of Civilation to be utterly dull(which is also how I feel about it, and I love studying history), especially if they’re used to a more traditional, textbook approach. Again…Sorry this is so long! I hope it helps! π
I’m sorry I’m no help. But good luck :)~Don’t forget to stop by!http://tanyaphotography-piecesofme.blogspot.com/
I am not able to help you here, but I am glad you asked because after 14 years of homeschooling I find myself for the first time in a long time, really struggling with next years planning for the kids.I will have a 9th grader and 6th grader and pretty much have my mind set that I am using MFW for the highschooler. I am torn with the 6th grader as we’d probably start with CTG’s but then miss the last year of the rotation before high school starts. So, I am seriously considering something else for the 6th grader, and have to say I found Kendra’s comments above very helpful in that aspect. Her thoughts have been kind of my fears with that program for this child. So, I am glad you posted this and am reading all the responses with great interest! Prayers for both of us in our planning!Tara B
I can’t help you either on MFW, but I am reading the comments with interest.I am, at this point at least, and have been since we started, a confirmed Sonlighter. The thing I really like about it is the flexibility. The books we really don’t like can be skipped, or substituted with something else, and I’m really (and so are the kids) enjoying the History spine for this year. I’m looking forward to the next Core also, but I have no idea about the High School Cores yet.
Thank you everyone for your insight and comments. I appreciate your willingness to share with me (and others!)
I really prefer putting together the programs myself – meaning we are ecclectic π I tried an “all in one” program once before (but not MFW), and it just didn’t work for us. We are at one level in on subject going fast, and another level in another subject and dragging as we struggle to grasp concepts – so the all in ones just don’t appeal to me. If your kids are at the same grade level for all subjects, I would say give it a try π I am always up for new curriculum!God Bless,Shellie
I do not home school so I am no help. Sorry!
I have LOOKED and POURED over MFW but in the end I do tend toward a more eclectic approach! I also plan on using Mystery of History when we start ancients again- did not want to use their their history.I will say this that whatever the program flaws are DAVID HAZEL the maker is amazing! His heart to have a GODLY curriculum is astounding. He truly believes in education but NOT at the expense of your relationship with GOD. I know it is expensive and a big investment- some of the reads cant be beat!!! SOOO hard making that choice!!! I will pray that God gives you peace in what curriculum you should buy!
