Death…and Life

Family Life

Contemplating

Remembering…and making new memories

Choices…and what is learned from them

Grief…and yet joy

Ashes…and yet beauty

So many thoughts were swirling through my head this past week as my family traveled to the California coast to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the sudden death of my sister and nephew. It was a time to reflect, remember, and express to the younger generation among us how choices can so profoundly affect our lives.

Precious time together.

Family in Monterey

At the scattering rocks

This area on the Monterey Peninsula was a favorite of my sister’s, and has long been one of my happy places. The picture above shows the location where we scattered the ashes of my sister and nephew 10 years ago. Despite the sadness of the circumstances surrounding that visit to this particular bit of coastline, Monterey remains a place my soul breathes its deepest.

As the cousins ran in the waves and climbed on the rocks, the adults reflected and wistfully commented on how much fun the missing one would be having along with them.

Cousins

It was a much-needed time of connecting–with each other and our family’s shared joys and heartaches.

Thank you, God, for the time you allowed us to carve out to be together. Thank you for the beauty you’ve given from the ashes.

Beautiful post, Lisa. I am sorry to hear of your loss, but glad that you had this time with family to remember and reflect and that there is a place you can go and breathe and feel at peace with this.
