How Comparing Stifles Thankfulness

31 Days of the Military Spouse

It’s hard to believe that there’s only a week left in this 31 Days series! I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a lot of fun.

I want to share an observation I made yesterday, about myself, but also about humans in general:

Comparing stifles thankfulness.

The thought came as I was moaning over the fact that the forecast in Indiana was calling for snow, while we still have our air conditioner running here. I was struggling with some contentment issues, needless to say.

After I regained a bit of my maturity, I realized that the more I focused on what “they” got and I didn’t, the less I was able to be thankful for what I do have here and now.

I’m only in this place for a relatively short amount of time, and if I spend my mental and emotional energy on what I don’t like about it, I’m likely to miss out on the good stuff God has for me.

One of the patterns I’ve found as I’ve talked with other military wives is that many talk about finding good aspects of each place they’ve lived. There are the occasional times I’ve heard, “I’m so glad we’re not there anymore!” but for the most part, there is a genuine attempt to find positives about each duty station.

I’m trying to learn how to follow their example.

So today, even though it’s 85 degrees and there is absolutely no snow to look forward to (sniffle), I am thankful for Texas; I’m thankful for the friends we’ve met here, the opportunity to experience this military environment, the friendliness of people in this state, the proximity to fun big cities, and those funny birds–grackles–that make us laugh.

I hope you can find things, large and small, to be thankful for today!
