Doesn’t this look so appealing? Garden vegetables picked fresh from your backyard? I love the idea. Well, kind of.
I enjoy eating garden fresh vegetables when they are shared with me. I’ve never had a garden of my own, however. I don’t enjoy gardening. There. I said it. Please don’t hate me.
I do look on and read with some envy those of you who love to be outside in the dirt. I can barely keep my one houseplant alive. I think the bulk of my “problem” stems (pun intended) from the fact that I don’t particularly enjoy being outside in the warmer months. I don’t like the heat, humidity, and bugs. For the last couple of years, we’ve done a cooperative garden with some friends, at their property. That’s about all I can handle and that’s because they have a pool. I’m ok with working in the garden for a short while and then jumping in the pool to cool off and laying on the deck with my book and ice water.
Are you shaking your head and clucking your tongue at me right now? The thing is, I feel guilty about all this. Something in my head tells me that if I was a good homemaker, wife, mother, whatever, I SHOULD enjoy gardening. I’m not sure where that comes from.
I do enjoy the end of the gardening season when several friends and I get together and do some canning. I have loved having canned garden veggies throughout the winter!
