For Love of Words

Jumping on the Bandwagon

Christian Life

3 Jan

This is me, jumping into the pool with others who have chosen One Word that they want to focus on for the year. I’ve read some really good posts on a variety of life-words, and it truly is inspiring.

When I started thinking about this about a week ago, my word immediately came to mind and didn’t go away. I rolled a couple of other words around, just in case, but they never quite fit. So, my word for 2012 is…

Peace

Peace…in my relationships, in a quieted heart and trusting mind, in contentment…peace.

Peace:  calm repose; free of strife or discord; harmony in personal relationship, especially with God (from my NLT dictionary)

This past year found me in strife and…what’s the opposite of calm? Panic, maybe? Unease, unrest? Well, whatever it was, it was not healthy or helpful. I want something different for this year.

These are the verses I want to memorize and live out:

For peace in relationships

“…If you want a happy life and good days, keep your tongue from speaking evil, and keep your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good. Work hard at living in peace with others.” 1Peter 3:10-11 (NLT, emphasis mine)

This is NOT the glossing over problems, pseudo-peace that I tend to be ok with too much of the time. This is the peace that comes from dealing with conflicts correctly, confessing, communicating, and giving up control. My husband would tell you that these are major problem areas for me. And he would be right.

For peace of heart and mind

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.” Isaiah 26:3-4 (NLT)

and

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6-7 (NLT)

Without a doubt, 2012 will throw some curve balls at me. That’s just the way life is. By the end of the year, however, I want to be able to say that through it all, I was at peace.

Great word Lisa! And you’re so right about the curveballs. The “peaceful” thing though is knowing that God gave you the word, so he will give you everything you need to keep that peace. Blessings today!

Great word – and I love the verses that you’ve chosen 🙂 I think my favorite thing about choosing a word and then blogging about it is that we all now have accountability from our friends to help keep us on track!

I love how you backed up your verse with Scripture.
    That is awesome.

And what a great word… what a great way to live.
Praying it becomes your new normal. 🙂

Wow, you are so right about “living at peace with others”- it is not sweeping things under the rug, but being loving and honest in communication and conflict resolution. I look forward to hearing more about your journey toward peace this year!
