“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling…Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Psalm 46: 1-3;10 (ESV)
Friday night we watched the newer version of The Karate Kid. There was a line in the movie that really caught my husband’s and my attention. While training his young student, Jackie Chan’s character says, “Being still, and doing nothing, are two very different things.”
We turned and looked at each other and at the same time said, “Psalm 46:10!” (It happens to be a favorite verse of my husband’s.)
As this verse says, it is possible for us to be still–at rest, relaxed, settled within and without–and focus our minds, hearts, and attention on who God is.
Keeping our physical body still is hard enough, I think, especially for us women who are just plain busy. BUT, keeping our mind still is even harder sometimes. I don’t know about you, but there are so many times when I try to be still and pray and my mind just races with a huge variety of different things. Being still is not easy for me!
So, my goal for myself this week is to find a little bit of time every day to be still. To sit quietly–not asking anything of the Lord–just acknowledging who He is and what He’s done.
I hope you all have a good week!
LOVE this post. and I love that verse!
