The Saturday Morning Review–Vocabulary Spelling City

Homeschooling· Reviews

18 Aug

Homeschool moms, do you use a formal spelling curriculum? Do your kids groan when you mention spelling words?

I can answer yes to both of those questions! However, I was recently given the chance to review a website that might just change all that.

I’d like to introduce VOCABULARY SPELLING CITY!

Have fun playing spelling games

VocabularySpellingCity.com offers:

  • Over 42,000 spelling words with customizable sentences and definitions
  • A REAL person who says each word and sentence
  • Free home pages for teachers and parents to save lists
  • Teacher training videos
  • Free printable handwriting worksheets
  • Free teaching resources with lists and lesson plans
  • Twenty-five games to play online or to print such as:
Alphabetical Order, Unscramble, Parts of Speech, HangMouse, Crossword Puzzle, WordSearch, and Vocabulary Test.
  • A free forum and newsletters

This website offers so much for teachers and students! Their Teacher Resource page is a treasure trove of great information, language arts lessons, printables, word lists, and research articles.

When we used this website, I didn’t have the time (or inclination, at the moment) to make up my own word list–which is one of the features of the site–so I used one of their 6th grade spelling lists. I picked which list to use and let my youngest loose to play the games, practice the words, and take the quizzes. She really enjoyed it!

We were given the Premium Membership package for review, which offers more games, student log-in, student assignments, record-keeping, and more. A Premium Membership is $29.99 per year for up to 5 students, and $49.99 for up to 25 students.

If you are looking for a fun way to focus on spelling and vocabulary, I recommend VocabularySpellingCity.com! To find out what others thought about the website, use the link below:

(The legal stuff:  I was given a Premium Membership in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.)

Great site and review. My personal favorite game is WordFind which I can’t seem to stop playing. I have a few of the high scores on the common lists!

Lisa is a great editor. She is thorough, and offers suggestions to help ensure my articles and ebooks are clear and concise. She’s a great communicator and has a way of offering suggestions and feedback in a positive manner. Having an editor you feel is as invested in your work as you are is priceless. That’s what you get with Lisa.
